about

With a name like Inhatred, I was gearing up for the worst: a blast of mind-numbingly whiny nu-metal, or maybe a shot of derivative tough-guy metalcore. After giving 10 Seconds Before Sunrise a good number of listens, however, I’ve learned yet another valuable lesson in the weak nature of assumptions.

Inhatred is the latest in the recent string of French bands producing quality metal (Benighted, Dagoba, Gojira, etc.) that’s slowly but surely causing me to forget any and all of the “surrender” jokes I once knew. 10 Seconds Before Sunrise sounds like a brutal mix of Burst and the aforementioned French cousins Gojira, with a sizeable dose of down-south groove thrown in for good measure. Songs like “We Are”, “Mama, They Bring Me Back Home In A Box Pt. II”, and “Stoned” (I’d hope so), contain some of the best dissonant stoner grooves I’ve heard on any album so far this year, while “Smooky Mountain” combines Burst-like melodic chaos with off-time, chopping blast beats.

The vocals layered overtop of each song are best described as bellows rather than screams. Vocalist Feus-t’s delivery leans towards the hardcore end of the spectrum (think Twelve Tribes but with more venom and no clean parts), and the sound he has is huge, albeit monotone at times, which contributes to the one problem I have with 10 Seconds Before Sunrise: with all the grinding heaviness, distinctiveness is lost around the midway point. Aside from the songs mentioned in the previous paragraph, which each have instantly recognizable riffage, the album doesn’t boast much in the way of memorable moments. In fact, during some tunes, I had the distinct impression that the band was actually bored with what they were playing, which in turn didn’t reflect very well on me, the listener.

On the whole, though, 10 Seconds Before Sunrise is well worth a listen, especially for fans of dirty, grooving metal with a touch of melody and hardcore. I guess France ain’t all that bad nowadays.
